DPI and sensitivity work as a pair

Your mouse turns movement into counts, and DPI sets how many counts it sends per inch. The game then turns each count into a small rotation, and sensitivity sets how large that rotation is. Multiply the two and you get your real speed, also called eDPI.

That is why a DPI change does not have to cost you your aim. If the new DPI is twice as high, halve the sensitivity and nothing changes in game. This DPI calculator does the division for you and shows the cm/360 so you can confirm both setups match.

Remember that DPI also changes your cursor speed on the desktop and in game menus. If the new speed feels wrong outside the game, adjust the pointer speed in your operating system rather than going back to the old DPI.

Mouse DPI Calculator FAQ

How do I keep the same sensitivity when I change DPI?

Multiply your sensitivity by your old DPI and divide by your new DPI. Going from 800 to 1600 DPI at sensitivity 0.4 gives 0.4 × 800 ÷ 1600 = 0.2. Your eDPI and cm/360 stay exactly the same.

What is DPI on a mouse?

DPI stands for dots per inch. It is the number of counts the mouse sensor reports for every inch you move it. At 800 DPI, one inch of movement sends 800 counts to the game. Some brands call it CPI, counts per inch, which is the same thing.

Is higher DPI better for gaming?

Not by itself. What you feel is DPI multiplied by sensitivity. A higher DPI with a lower sensitivity turns at the same speed, though very small movements can register a little more smoothly. Most players use 400, 800 or 1600 DPI.

Why does the calculator ask for a game?

In most games sensitivity is proportional, so halving it exactly cancels a doubled DPI. A few games, such as Minecraft, PUBG and Battlefield, use curved or offset sliders. For those the calculator follows the real in-game curve so the result is still correct.

Do I need to change Windows pointer speed too?

Most modern shooters read raw mouse input and ignore Windows pointer settings. Leave the Windows slider on the middle notch (6 of 11) with Enhance pointer precision turned off, and only change your in-game sensitivity.
